"Bring it on" Dick Cheney and Jim DeMint

Last night, I was invited to appear on MSNBC's "Ed Show" to discuss, amongst other things, former Vice President Dick Cheney's dishonest, unpatriotic, hypocritical and highly personal continuing attacks on President Obama. I also discussed South Carolina Republican Senator Jim DeMint's record of putting his personal hatred of Labor Unions and his devotion to ideology above making sure we have all of the tools possible to protect the security of our Nation.

Christmas Eve is a time to gather with friends and family to reflect on the good things in life. It's a time to share our joys and our hopes for peace on earth and good will towards all.

This year Christmas Eve has a sad and ironic twist to it however.

As we begin our deployment of 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, this Christmas Eve will also mark the 3,000th day of the war in Afghanistan and the 30th anniversary of the initial Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Thus far, this war has already cost the American taxpayer a minimum of $300,000,000,000 according to the Congressional Research Service (and that's just the funding that's "on budget").

Sadly, the fact that we're spending about $101 million per day in this war is the good news. The financial cost of this war is nothing compared to the fact that 937 American troops have been killed, and 4,434 have been wounded (and that's not counting the thousands more that will carry the memories of this war for their entire lives).

Last night, November 4th, I spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives to mark the 2,950th day of the war in Afghanistan and formalized my call to draw this conflict to a conclusion. As a freshman member of Congress that served in the United States Navy for 24 years, it has been my honor to serve on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee, and because of my background and experience, I think it's my duty to speak out on this issue.

Cancer is the number one killer of people under age 85 and is the second leading cause of death for women. One in two men and one in three women will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has determined that the total cost of cancer, including medical treatments and the loss of productivity, exceeded $228 billion in 2008.

Today the power of the grassroots/netroots movement has prevailed. In combined efforts, through emails, letters, faxes, phone calls, blogs and town hall meetings, the people of Western New York have rallied to stop Time Warner from charging customers for the amount of information they download off of the internet.

It's been an incredibly busy day in our office. Last night I met with Congressman Steve Israel and signed onto his bill, The Bailout Bonus Tax Bracket Act of 2009, which if passed will tax bailout bonuses over $100k at a rate of 100%.

I will not stand by and be silent while these corporate swindlers make off with our tax dollars.

If you're like me, I'm sure you're sick of all of the negativity we're reading in the press and seeing on the television. While it's true that there is a lot of bad news right now, on Wednesday there was some very good news out of Washington worth noting. On that day, we passed the State Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009, or the SCHIP expansion for short. Just a few short hours after this bill was passed in the House, President Obama signed it into law once and for all.

As a freshman member of Congress that made the expansion of children's healthcare a cornerstone of my campaign, this is a truly powerful and emotional moment for me. I have debated this issue for years and the bottom-line has remained the same - If we don't take care of our children, then what do we stand for? I believe in an America that makes our children's health and safety a top priority and now it's not just a belief, it's law.
